Article summary

Abstract

Portrait sculpture is one of the oldest and most significant branches of visual art,
serving as a medium for preserving the physical appearance, personality, cultural
identity, and historical importance of individuals. From the ancient civilizations of
Egypt, Greece, and Rome to contemporary digital sculptural practices, portrait sculpture
has continuously evolved through changes in artistic philosophy, technological
advancement, and material innovation. This research examines the complete process
of realistic portrait sculpture, including studio planning, working environment,
materials, sculptural tools, armature construction, direct and indirect sculpting methods,
modelling procedures, mould making, casting techniques, surface finishing, conservation
methods, and comparative analysis of sculptural materials. The study integrates
traditional sculptural knowledge with modern professional practices while emphasizing
realistic portrait modelling. Data for this research are primarily derived from the
provided study material on sculptural methods and materials, supplemented with
established scholarly literature on sculpture, conservation, and portrait modelling. The
research further investigates the working methods of internationally recognized portrait
sculptors to evaluate practical applications and artistic innovations. The findings reveal
that successful portrait sculpture depends upon careful observation, anatomical
knowledge, proper material selection, structural stability, technical proficiency, and
systematic execution of each production stage. Furthermore, technological developments
such as silicone moulds, fiberglass reinforcement, resin casting, and digital modelling
have significantly expanded the possibilities of portrait sculpture while maintaining
the importance of traditional craftsmanship. The study concludes that an integrated
understanding of artistic principles, material science, and sculptural techniques is
essential for producing durable, aesthetically refined, and historically meaningful
portrait sculptures.
